Custom Tracksuits for Clubs: What to Specify Before You Order

A club tracksuit is worn at every away trip, warm-up and presentation, so small spec mistakes show up on a lot of people. This guide lists what to decide before you ask a manufacturer for a quote.

Tracksuit ART# MI-8901 by Maswiz Industries: navy jacket and pants with red, white and light blue chest stripes
Key takeaways
  • Decide jacket style, pants cuff and pocket layout first, because they change both the look and the price.
  • Pick fabric for how the suit is used: travel and warm-ups need different weight from training.
  • Fix logo size and position once, and apply the same rules to every size.
  • Order a size run from player measurements, then approve a sample before bulk production.

Choose the tracksuit style

Start with the silhouette. Most clubs choose between a full-zip jacket and a pullover top, and between straight-leg pants and pants with an elasticated or zipped ankle cuff. A full-zip jacket is easier to put on over a kit and easier to take off between games. A pullover is simpler and often costs less to make, but it is harder to wear over shin guards or a shirt with a number on the back.

Pockets matter more than they seem. Zipped hand pockets keep keys and phones secure on a travel day, while open pockets are quicker to use. Decide this up front, because a manufacturer will price and sample them differently. If you want to see how different layouts look in practice, compare the navy tracksuit ART# MI-8901 with red, white and light blue chest stripes with the black tracksuit ART# MI-8904 with orange shoulder panels and side stripes.

Fabric and weight

Tracksuits for clubs usually use a polyester knit, a polyester-cotton fleece, or a lighter woven shell. Knit and fleece feel warmer and softer, which suits cold-weather warm-ups. A woven shell packs smaller and sheds light rain, which suits travel. Many clubs end up with one suit for all of this, so choose the fabric that handles the most common use.

Fabric weight is measured in GSM, grams per square metre. Heavier is warmer but also bulkier in a kit bag. Ask your manufacturer for the GSM and composition of the sample fabric in writing instead of judging by feel alone. Our sportswear fabric guide explains how polyester blends behave, and our GSM explainer covers weight in more detail.

If you plan to use sublimation for the whole panel design, the base fabric needs to be polyester or a high-polyester blend, because the dye bonds with synthetic fibre. Cotton-rich fleece takes embroidery and screen printing better.

Club branding and placement

Most club tracksuits carry a crest on the left chest, a sponsor or club name on the back, and sometimes player names on the sleeve or pants. Product pages on this site list logo options such as satin stitching, silk printing, normal and 3D embroidery and heat transfer print, plus patches, badges and labels. Which one fits depends on the fabric and how detailed your crest is.

Tip: Send crest artwork as a vector file with Pantone or named colours, and mark the exact placement on a flat drawing. Related reading: hoodies vs sweatshirts for brands, if your club also orders hooded tops.

Sizing a whole squad

A club order spans juniors, adults, wide and narrow builds, and often coaches and staff. Collect chest, waist, hip and inseam measurements from a sample of players in each age group, then build your size run from those numbers instead of guessing from shirt sizes. The sizing and fit guide for team uniforms walks through this step by step. Maswiz can supply all sizes, and you should ask for a size chart in centimetres and inches before you finalise quantities.

Decide fit before you decide sizes. A slim athletic cut, a regular cut and a relaxed cut all produce different measurements at the same label size. Pick one cut for the whole squad so the team looks uniform on the pitch.

Specification checklist

Common mistakes

Skipping the sample

A tracksuit looks different in a photo than on a player. Approve a physical sample before the full run.

Mixing fits across sizes

Changing the cut between junior and adult lines makes the squad look uneven.

Vague colour briefs

"Dark blue" can mean ten different shades. Give a reference code for every colour.

Late crest changes

Changing artwork after sampling can restart the approval process. Lock the design first.
